Overview
The Bird Point Count Database (http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/point/) is a public repository for storing and sharing avian point count data. The objective of the database is to help people who are conducting point counts manage their program (points and observers) and associated data (bird and vegetation). Users can acccess the database via the internet to view and retrieve point count data. A number of standard reports can be generated. Advanced analysis tools and visualizations are currently under construction (http://tools.sepif.org/). Agencies and programs in 49 U.S. states, 2 U.S. terriories (Samoa and Puerto Rico), and one Canadian province (Alberta) use the point count database. The site is managed by USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.
Strengths
The database is a central repository for point count data where all data are entered in a similar format to facilitate analyses from site to regional scales. Web pages allow for data management and report generation. Individual program data can be downloaded for use in other software programs. Data entry is conducted through a standard browser interface that reduces training time for data entry personnel. On-line data entry allows data to be immediately available for summary report generation. Data entry is password protected. Alternatively, data can also be uploaded if entered offline using a Microsoft Access database template.
Weaknesses
There are some known bugs in the generated reports but these issues are being addressed. On-line data entry requires high-speed and reliable internet access. Most data are not shared with the Avian Knowledge Network. Although the data in the Bird Point Count Database are technically freely available, users can currently only access their own data. Accessing another users data requires the permission ofom the data owner and the manager of the Bird Point Count Database.
Examples
The National Wildlife Refuge System uses the Bird Point Count Database to store and access bird monitoring data collected by refuge biologists. The Eastern Painted Bunting Working Group (http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/point/pabu/) uses the Bird Point Count Data Database to: 1) allow volunteers to enter range-wide survey data online and 2) Store and access all monitoring data and survey site information.
